Yeah very high indeed. He didn't even set his feet half the time and he generated huge power.

Some way behind Wilde and Fitzsimmons

I think he had accurate and freakish angles of punches and a unique style that was really difficult to plan and prepare for. he'd catch fighters from all sorts of crazy angles that opponents simply couldn't answer or simply didn't plan for. that's what made him exciting to watch. he did have power I'm not disputing that but he was a one in a million type of fighter. he was also a showman who played the camera and audience.

he won me over and got me watching boxing regularly instead of just watching the odd fight here and there. I cant rank him don't how to

Fuck knows?

Compare Lennox Lewis to hamed.who is p4p a bigger hitter, cos Lennox could bang.

Wilde and fitzimmons have been mentioned, what about other old timers?,and what about Nigel benn? What about David haye?

Has to be up there. Ring magazine had him 46th all time in 2003.

Ranked relative to what?

In general terms, very high. A combination of things lead me to think that. He wasn't the best at setting up his work. He worked in fits and starts, he wasn't a fluid puncher so to fight in such an unorthodox way and display such regular fight ending power is unusual. Secondly, he had stoppages that immediately stand out as being a top puncher, they weren't all ref stepped in/attritional stoppages.

You could look at his unorthdoxy the other way, he probably was able to land weird punches that surprised opponents more regularly which may prompt a line of thinking which says he wasn't a freakish puncher but managed to catch people very clean without them seeing. I think that argument is tenuous though.
