Although Carter was known for being somewhat inconsistant (to say the least), he acquitted himself very well in rematches...I credit him for that....but I think that in Sammy Angott, he would be fighting a very crafty, devilishly smart spoiler who would have outsmarted him over 15 for an upset win IMO. Engatti was a negative master in the annals of boxing history who would have frustrated the life out of Jimmy.

Lou Ambers/Billy Petrolle at LW
Hard to make a pick because Billy Petrolle at his peak was aways a jr. welterweight. At catchweight I pick Billy Petrolle as he hit harder
Sammy Angott/Jimmy Carter-
I go with Sammy [clutch]Angott as he faced overall stiffer competition like aSRR, Henry Armstrong, Ike Williams.
Sammy Mandell/Rudolfo Gonzales
Sammy Mandell was one of the best pure boxers ever, and I know little of Gonzales so my pick is Mandell
Joe Brown / Lew Tendler-
Lew Tendler who had the misfortune to come along at the same time as the great Benny Leonard might have been amongst the best
lightweights ever and being a southpaw didn't hurt...Tendler beats Joe Brown..

Carter was a good, solid technician with power, but he could be spoiled by unorthodox/unpredictable styles (i.e.: DeMarco, Salas). I think Angott would follow in the footsteps of those fighters by similarly spoiling his way to a decision.

I agree with this, watched a wee bit of Carter recently, also thought he had a tendency to be great in some fights then somewhat lacklustre in another. Maybe the mob connections were true.
