Similarities in Style between GGG and Joe Louis

Just watching GGG-Stevens and Lederman, in a rare moment of clarity, said GG was an accurate, come forward, punching machine. This got me thinking about Joe Louis and I see some similiarites between he and Joe Louis. GGG has a ramrod jab that he uses to push his opponents back and open up their guard. He doesn't move a lot but maintains fantastic balance as he inevitably and patiently moves forward. He doesn't look for the knockout but allows it to happen. However, when his opponent is hurt, he goes for blood. Every single punch, even that jab, is designed for power but thanks to his amateur career, maintains tremendous technique.

Sounds like Louis to me...

I don't think they're that similar well both a methodical pressure fighters but Louis stance is completely unique and if GGG is similar to anyone it's JCC Sr

never thought of chavez but it's there. the problem is GGG has pretty flimsy defense at the top level...chavez sr would keep his hands up, block and parry while making subtle head movements. the thing that I love that he does like chavez is keeps his eyes open during his opponets attacks, never closes them. GGG does have a high guard as well but he never moves his head and isn't that mobile (much like Louis). In terms of offense though, he is a LOT like chavez especially that damn body punching.

Yeah he isn't quite JCC Sr technically but he is very similar and I think Sanchez said when he started to train GGG they watched fights of Chavez and he told him that this is how he is going to fight so it's no secret Sanchez tries to make him fight like Chavez and GGG is doing a decent job at it

As an "oldtimer" I think the world of GGG as a throwback, good enough for any era...The most amazing fact is that in over 300 amateur bouts and 25
pro fights ,GGG has never been FLOORED...Is his style like Joe Louis's ? It is hard to compare anyone with Louis, as his combination punching
and perfect leverage has never been duplicated....GGG is my favorite fighter of this era by far....A baby faced assassin...

From what I have seen of him so far, he also reminds me of Chavez. A little cruder I think, but the similarity is there. I'd like to see him throw that left to the body more when in the centre of the ring though; I've noticed he usually only brings it out a fair amount when he has his opponent on the ropes.
He also needs to tighten up the defense a little. Ouma was catching him solidly with uppercuts right throughout their fight, and Golovkin never adjusted to that.

But the Chavez similarity continues with their temperaments as well...sort of cool, calm, baby-faced killers in the ring.

Louis was more of a subtle stalker than Golovkin who presses the action and has a high output.

There are similarities but that is the main difference. Louis preferred to work off what you did. Golovkin is a touch more trigger happy.

high praise from you burt :cheers also heard your praise for matthysse. i'm liking GGG more and more by the day and it's honestly the fundamentals that get me. My favourite fighter all time by FAR is Roy Jones but the guys i'm digging lately have mastered the basics so much they are a joy to watch

Hya J, long time no speak ! Yes I had high praise for lucas matthysse. But after his last debacle which showed his limitations as an
all around fighter, I am disappointed somewhat. It seemed to me as he was slower than his prior bouts. It happens to all fighters
at sometime in their career. But I always look forward to my favorite fighter now GGG...He could hit with power and on target.
I have been watching boxing for too long a time, and loved the competitive fighters of the 1940s and 1950s...They to make a living had to fight
OFTEN and the best and because of the deep pool of fighters those halcyon days brought out the top champions and contenders...
But I truly believe that GGG would have fit in very well with the top middleweights of those days, EVEN if he has never beaten the quality of fighters
of yesterday...No fighter can be pick the date of their birth...Roy Jones at times in his early career seemed unbeatable for sure, but it seems to me
that were he fighting the top middleweights of the 1940s and 50s, as Ezzard Charles, jimmy bivins, archie moore, Harold Johnson, a Lloyd Marshall
his not too concrete a chin would have been tested and found wanting....All those guys above could hit and could take it in return if needed..,

One thing with Golovin though, from what I can tell, is that his hands aren't exactly blisteringly quick. It's been adequate up until now, but I wonder if he ever had to face a real slick mover in there, if this would not be his undoing?

Don't get me wrong, I too think he's fantastic, but one or two little signs that I'm picking up on suggest to me that he still has some things to work on.
