Bernard Dunne getting lifting his scrawny chinny self off the canvas twice against Ricardo Cordoba and rallying to stop him in the 11th is definitely one of the fights that made me a hardcore fan.

Dunne probably doesnt know how many Irish people he introduced to boxing back in the day.
That fight was so ace. The crowd were absolutely bananas that night.

I can watch that fight over and over again and never get bored of it.

I was born in 1968, but I have memories of Ali's fight with Norton when his Jaw was broken. I was always drawn in by the mic work of Ali and Howard Cosell. The Alin cartoon was also a draw for me. There wad a neighborhood guy who was also a boxing fan. He gave me his collection of Big Book of Boxing, Ring and KO magazines. There were hundreds of issues, and I read them all. After that I was always a boxing fan.
I am a bit older than you. Ali-Norton was one of my early memories too. But for me it started with the build-up for the first Al-Frazier fight. I watched Ali's warmup fights and then everybody was talking about this Fight of the Century. It seemed like the entire world stopped.

I feel fortunate to have been born into such a great period of heavyweight boxing.

I was just about to post basically the same thing word for word. Back then when there was a huge heavyweight fight you would listen to the radio but they could only give a 30 second description of the a round after the round was over.

he is the guns n roses of boxing.

brilliant from 86-88 and then it all went to shit after that.

while he was prime mike tho, no one could touch him.
I have a career set of his on top quality DVDs. He just used to knock people out left, right and centre. Then he lost his discipline before the Douglas fight- drugs, women and failing to train, and then it all went wrong - or did Douglas just put on a masterclass?

Desiree Washington has a lot to answer to, as has that c*nt Don King for ripping Mike out of millions, as he did most of the boxers he managed.

Mike Tyson isn't my favourite boxer, that's reserved for Jorge Paez, Diego Corrales and Arturo Gatti, but he's not far off.

As stated earlier, in my lifetime I won't see anything like Mike Tyson ever again.

tyson was on the slide well before douglas.

the minute he got rid of rooney as his trainer, his boxing skills went south.

basically gave up on training.

it just so happened douglas was the one to get him.

if not douglas, it would definitely have been holyfield.

When do you think Mike Tyson started to slide?

He leathered Michael Spinks in 91 seconds, Frank Bruno twice, Tony Tubbs, Tyrell Biggs, Carl Williams all prior to James Douglas.

Aaron Snowell wasn't really that good in the Douglas fight. He forgot the enswell, so he had to use a glove full of cold water on Mike's eyes. When you're a pro trainer getting paid millions you should not forget stuff like that.

I suppose you could say Mike was done when Cus passed.

Mike Tyson's career is so fascinating.

Read the Montieth Illingworth book about him, fascinating.

nah man mike was only just getting started when cus died.

tyson's last fight with rooney was spinks.

each fight after that, he gets worse.

i mean his head movement, he starts getting hit more.

the first bruno fight mike was struggling to put him away. plus he came in out of condition, since he had to lose like 50lb rapidly before that fight, ie he wasn't training like he should. yes he won, but it was not a vintage mike fight.

carl williams he put out with one shot, guy was susceptible to left hooks which mike was a veteran at.

by the time douglas happened he was out of shape again and had to shed weight fast, and by his own admission did not even train for it, since he was supposed to win easily.

but against that douglas, even a fully fit, kevin rooney trained tyson still would not put him away easily, if at all.

douglas had the fight of his life, he never fought that good again, or before.

Hell,

James Douglas was done in the next fight, Holy did him in three. I applaud him for getting dropped in the Tyson fight and then dropping Mike Tyson. He was the first person to do so. He had the fight of his life right there. I remember the US press saying after that fight and all the reports coming across from Tokyo that most people thought they were having a laugh, no one believed it. Tyson was untouchable until then. If Mike Tyson had stayed off of drugs, fanny and stuck to a decent training regime he'd have kept those belts.

Mike Tyson could have had it all fifty times over if he'd kept that discipline, he didn't, and them's the breaks. Look at Naseem Hamed when he left Brendan Ingle and let his brothers run his training. That went to sh*t. Kid was absolutely fab, used to throw punches from angles you couldn't imagine. Look at the Kevin Kelly fight. Also, Halloween with Wayne McCullough, don't get me started on him, Wayne, you could not get him off of his feet, you could not drop him, Hamed tried, Morales tried, Oscar Larios tried, Scott Harrison tried everyone tried, not one could drop him. I do believe his chin was made of iron. Super nice bloke apparently. I never met him, but my friends who did said he was such a good bloke. That's what we like in the boxing fraternity, teak tough chins and ace fellas.

Dropping weight is such a big deal. I remember Naz Hamed saying prior to MAB that he was laid in a bath full of boiling hot water, couldn't lift his head up because he was so weight drained. Then look what happened. MAB just went to town on him.

Douglas was incredibly talented though; he was just a slob who had no dedication for the most part. What you saw in the Tyson fight was literally only time in his pro career that he was motivated and trained really hard. You don't take a young Tyson apart without great natural talent, even if he is on the slide a bit.

But thats the difference between Douglas and ATG heavyweights, talent without dedication rarely gets you to the top and it never keeps you there.

I love that fight to, a barnburning slugfest with 6 knockdowns, ebbs and flows, plenty of heart shown, a great crowd and the underdog getting the win in the end.

The biased as fuck Irish commentary on the fight always gives me a good giggle to.....any hint of objectivity disappears from every Irishman when one of our own is doing well:lol:

They just smashed each other to bits. That, is what I like.

No one saw it coming. People saw Mike as untouchable, then we had that. James Douglas put in the performance of his life, that was his Hopkins - Trinidad moment, but his time in the sun didn't last that long. What a shame.

James will have earned a fair few $$$$$$$$$$$$$$millions from that fight though. Fair play to him. You don't leather Mike Tyson and don't get paid out.

Getting up off of the canvas and then dropping Mike, heck, That stuff just doesn't happen.

agreed.

tyson himself said well let's see how long his reign lasts.

he just had one magical night against mike, he never fought like that before or after.

i also believe he couldn't handle the fame of being champ.

hence the quick ko loss to holyfield.
