If this fight goes ahead, John inside the distance. He'll make Rees work at a relentless pace, and with Rees' previous stamina problems I expect John to take full advantage of a tired Rees late on

Martin Gethin is Rees' mandatory opponent for the British Title though. We've been doing a bit of work with him and this is what he told us:

IBF International Lightweight Champion, Martin Gethin, has today accused Gavin Rees of running scared.

The 28 year-old, who defeated Carl Johanneson to claim his title last month, is the number one contender to Rees' British lightweight crown after the British Boxing Board of Control put him forward as the Welshman's next opponent.

The fight has been put out for purse bids, which are due to be received by 17th November, but Rees' promoter, Eddie Hearn, announced yesterday that they were in advanced talks with John Murray to be his next opponent. An angry Gethin is convinced that Rees is trying to dodge him.

"It seems likes he's running scared," Gethin told uko-boxing.com. "I'm the mandatory fight for Rees. I beat Carl Johanneson in style and am on a winning streak.

"This is what I've been working towards and the British Boxing Board of Control have made me the mandatory contender for a crack at the title.

"Purse bids have been called. I've been busy keeping myself ticking over waiting for the fight to come through. Then yesterday, I hear that Rees' camp are in talks with John Murray. It's disrespectful to me."

Hearn didn't stipulate that the mooted Rees-Murray clash would be for the British belt and, now that the BBBoC have put Rees-Gethin out to purse bids, that fight is binding unless the Challenger agrees to step aside or the Champion relinquishes his belt to take a different contest. One thing is certain, Gethin is in no mood to step aside and allow Rees to make a voluntary defence.

"I'm the number one challenger for the belt," added the Walsall fighter. "I know I've got what it takes to beat Rees and get the British Title. I like John Murray but, no disrespect, he's been stopped in his last two fights. He's held the British (title) before, so it's time for him to step aside. Not me.

"I've seen a lot of Rees and he doesn't like opponents who press up on him. He knows that's what I'm about and I don't think he fancies getting in the ring with me. He knows I'm dangerous.

"He's trying to swerve me but he can't. I'm after him. This is my time."

Ends

There's no doubt Gethin's earned a British title shot but let's be honest, Rees is well above that level and has a world title shot on the way after he beats Murray. He doesn't need to mess around with the British belt any more so he should just vacate it.
