One of the most brutal fights I've ever seen. Emile Griffith alone didn't kill Paret IMO.
Flea, you're right about Fullmer's versatility//he wasn't 1-dimensional at all really. I'll look at the Spider Webb vid,...and another example of Gene's versatility..is the two bouts with Basilio.Black and white footage from different angle as well (bit better IMO)
I maintain that Gene doesn't get enough credit. Due to his crudeness and most remembering Ray's amazing KO of him I reckon. He wasn't briliant but he was a very good champion. I uploaded his win over Spider Webb if anyone cares to take a look, it ain't pretty but shows that Fullmer was a little more versatile than most remember.
That's cuz he robbed Floro Fernandez of his championship:fireI maintain that Gene doesn't get enough credit.

Don Dunphy's call on the telecast videotape does exist, but only the conclusion is currently on youtube:Only highlights available if I'm not mistaken? Maybe I'm wrong...
Ironically, the hardest punch of Paret's on extant footage is probably his KD of Griff in their rubber match, something that most WWs wouldn't have gotten up from.Anyway, as your welter vs middle champ bouts goes, this one was a horrid matchup. Paret liked a row and didn't hit hard, Fullmer was stronger and hit much harder. Nasty matchup for Paret and I agree that this softened him up for the rubber match with Griffith.
True! Don't wanna make Paret out to be feather fisted, but just in terms of what he'd have needed to be equipped to give himself even half a chance of not being crushed by Fullmer.Don Dunphy's call on the telecast videotape does exist, but only the conclusion is currently on youtube:

Yet another irony is that if Emile had taken care of business in their second bout as he did in the first, Benny wouldn't have been placed with Gene, and might have lived to a reasonable age.
Of course it's also overlooked (for good reason), that this was Gene's final career win. He'd now defended against SRR, Florentino and Benny in 1961 alone, but would be out of action for over ten months before dropping the MW Title to Tiger. The BWAA Fighter of the Year was finished as a winner, but has now lived to reach 82.
(Must be that clean Mormon lifestyle. Perhaps LaMotta should give it a try...oh, wait...DUH!!!:gsg:beer:rastapimp)
I thought Ring of Fire was a pretty good documentary with Gil Clancy's key input about the Griffith-Paret trilogy, and you've also seen their first bout.True! I actually think Griffith won the 2nd fight. What're your thoughts on that? Any info' you have of the build-up/fallout would be very much appreciated.
Mustafa frustrated with his complete lack of output at times.I thought Ring of Fire was a pretty good documentary with Gil Clancy's key input about the Griffith-Paret trilogy, and you've also seen their first bout.
I agree Emile may well have deserved the decision in their second match, but after the first bout, he had to produce another knockout to retain the WW Title, not chance a decision which could set up a rubber showdown. Ring of Fire does make it clear though that punching people out was not ever his temperament, and if Benny had made a complete recovery and retired to a long healthy life as a butcher shop owner, the remainder of Griff's career would have unfolded pretty much as it actually did. Griffith-Paret III was not Charles-Baroudi. Emile would always have frustrated fans with his reserved and sparing use of power, just as Eddie Mustafa Muhammad later did.
Eh, he's no thulani malinga.Black and white footage from different angle as well (bit better IMO)

Eddie might still be competing with Griff's fanatical conditioning ethic. If Emile's holding back of the big guns was aggravating, at least he also showed up in shape.Mustafa frustrated with his complete lack of output at times.
The part preceding the Paret trilogy should be interesting to you, how he wound up in boxing, how Clancy trained him from the ground up, also the way his career concluded. Beyond that, I'll not spoil the details for you. Watching it when you have the opportunity will be time well spent.I have yet to watch that documentary (I know, I know!)
I rate his win over Tiger very, very highly.Emile was probably one of the finest ring mechanics ever IMO.
Downloading it now :good I just assumed it was only about the third Paret fight.Eddie might still be competing with Griff's fanatical conditioning ethic. If Emile's holding back of the big guns was aggravating, at least he also showed up in shape.
