Carl Froch statement - 24/01/2014

"There has been plenty of speculation over the last few weeks regarding my future. As it stands we are looking closely at two options George Groves and Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr. Yesterday, we made a seven figure offer to George Groves for a second fight that would have seen him earn around double that of the first. Disappointingly, George rejected this offer so we are continuing our talks with Top Rank and HBO regarding Chavez Jnr. I understand the demand for the Groves fight in the UK, but also the demand in the US for the Chavez fight. Talks are on-going and no doubt some further news will break soon. I’m happy to fight anyone, as I have done throughout my entire career."

Thoughts?

My personal perspective is that Carl is smart to put the squeeze on George. I also think seven figures should be enough incentive for George to take a rematch he will be very confident of winning. However, whether or not George was right to reject the offers depends on the stuff on top of the money (options e.t.c)

Also, given the generally over-the-top reaction to Sportsmen pay, claiming George turned down seven figures is not a bad first move to win back some casual fans...

It seems to just confirm what most of his talk has been about the last day or two, he wants Groves to take less money.
Ha, by offering him more money than the first fight?. he should be grateful he is being offered a second chance with more money. I thought groves wanted a chance to avenge the "robbery" of the first fight so if this is true George should have happily accepted

Froch has the "world" title, he "won" the first fight and so holds all the cards, it will be on his terms and rightfully so if you think about it, Disappointed in Groves if and again i stress the word IF, this is true.

 Don't be stupid.
The IBF ruling hasn't even been decided yet & could be renamed mandatory if his application is accepted.
The offer will have as many options as K2 - Rematch clause, gloves, any bullshit you can think of.
Most likely been offered ÂŁ1,000,000 on the dot - it's 'seven' figures.
The fight will make X amount, say it makes ÂŁ10,000,000 - George deserves & would want at least double that.
Theres been no negotiations, why accept the first offer that comes your way?

Come on...

Behave. Say it was a ÂŁ1.2million offer, of a ÂŁ5million purse, he has every right to turn it down. Groves was mandatory for the first fight so his percentage was pre set, now he has a much bigger fan base, is higher rated and is 50% of why the rematch is so big. He's entitled to more this time, not more than Froch, but a higher percentage than before.

Could just be that Froch wants no part of a Groves rematch, and they're trying to save face by making out Groves is the reason the fight won't happen, so he can go and take an easier fight and not be accused of avoiding the rematch.

Will be interesting to hear Groves' response

That's why they offered him double..did you read the statement?

Groves will get some of the PPV money as well so its not only a million. As the challenger and as an already beaten challenger at that, he should take the fight and be grateful for the second chance. i do agree with you on the options and whatnot but if this is all about money than Groves has disappointed me slightly as he wouldn't keep his mouth shut about a rematch and now he has been offered one. Remember all the "Froch wont give me a remacth anyway, knows he was lucky and knows i'll beat him again".

Its time for Groves to prove it.

But i thought he was only bothered about revenge and putting the robbery right?, he can't moan about over a million plus PPV percentage, its a lot of money. Froch doesn't even have to re match him but is giving him a second chance and i though Groves really wanted it. I understand if its about other stuff but Money shouldn't really be that big of an issue here, as its not like he is getting paid peanuts. (and yes i know fighters these day care about money too much, its a sad state of affairs)

I believe Groves got ÂŁ500k (or ÂŁ500k guaranteed) for the first fight. I believe 75-25 is a fair offer, that was effectively the split before.

What makes the bargaining interesting is that this isn't like Frampton/Quigg or Mayweather/Pacquiao where both sides are capable of throwing offers and counter-offers around.

I think people are right to point out you don't take the first offer. There will come a time where what George has to take it or leave what's on the table. That's when the blame game can start...

Yes, fighters do care too much about money. But I don't think this is the case, it seems he has been offered a bad deal and is rightly turning it down, he got 25% last time ÂŁ600k apparently, and now he is being offered double, which will probably be nearer 20% this time. If he was being unreasonable (Hearn said he wasn't) then I would understand, but to turn down a seemingly bad offer is not unreasonable.

From what I've heard, it seems he just wants a better deal than last time without asking for an obscene amount. But I could be wrong, it just seems this statement is a good bit of PR from Froch so he can duck the rematch for now.
