We have seen it so many times where joe Gallagher states his man won't face lundy/fielding/Murray/selby because they are past them or close to a title shot so don't need them.

I know it's been said that he used this tactic to push up the payday for Antony crolla and so effectively himself with John Murray, but on others he categorically states his man won't be fighting the expected opponent, much to the bemusement of Eddie Hearn who looked dumbfounded on Saturday night in the Callum smith interview,as well he might when the biggest 2 scouse derbys around have been talked down and dismissed by Gallagher and Paul smith.

Now Gallagher has a winning run of 50 odd fights at the moment and some were tough fights,quigg-Munroe,smith-buckland etc.

So does he have a say as I believe he is also manages his fighters as well,or can Hearn overrule him and say 'no,crolla is fighting lundy'

Because let's face it,he must be an absolute bastard to work alongside.very accomplished trainer who is improving rapidly but so stubborn and if he thinks he is acting in the best interests of his fighters then fair enough.

But avoiding rocky fielding,is not in the best interests of Callum smith, that just smacks of Gallagher being a pain and flexing his muscles.

Perhaps Hearn will get tired of this, bear in mind gallaghers stable is now nearly all with Hearn.

If he's the manager as well of course he's got the right to turn down opponents. That's the nature of the role.
But shooting down Hearn isn't being helpful,he has potentially done it twice now in a week, that's if lundy was who Hearn wanted for crolla.

I can see he is looking out for his lads, but he should be working with Hearn not against him.

I agree with him on this one. Risk/reward it doesn't add up.

Surely Hearn should be discussing opponents with Crolla's manager (if Gallagher is, and if this is what's happened) before making offers.

Anybody see why it would hurt Callum smitb to fight rocky fielding?

It's one fight and one camp, world aspirations can surely be put on hold.and it will be his first main event and first scheduled 12 rounder.good buisness all round in my opinion.

Yeah and Hearn does know how to charm a camera unlike joe.

I agree that lundy doesn't make sense but I want to see it.

If Gallagher comes out and says "We want to fight Rocky Fielding. Thats the only fight we want next!" I would imagine a significantly lower purse will be offered than if Gallagher comes out and says "We don't want that fight". It worked for the Crolla v Murray fight.

Gallagher appears to take on some of the managment capacitys for his fighters in the same way Adam Booth & Gary Locket do, not sure if its in an official capacity. Hearn also does the same thing, performing many roles that would be traditional for the manager. This allows him to pay fighters less than Warren in some instances, but they still make more as they are not losing 25%+ to a manager. Crolla, The Smiths, Johnson, Burton, Quigg are all self managed.

For what its worth, when I spoke to Hearn it came across that Fielding would be the one stopping that fight.

I think its a good fight for Smiths profile, but in terms of learning to be a world class fighter, no so sure.

I think a promoter will tend to go and find a selection of opponents and then they take that to the manager/fighter/trainer and they pick one.

With prospects they will often have 2/3 fighters who are activley training for the fight and the will pick the opponent based on how the prospect looks in sparring.

I see your points there and Gallagher would be great to have on your side, very loyal and knows the buisness inside out.

I just can't be sure that Callum's next opponent will be better than fielding, also fighting a man with nearly as big as,or equal a reach as yourself has to be beneficial.

I think we see Paul Smith v Rocky Fielding in December or early 2015.

When Smith gets smashed, I think he'll try and win his belt outright v Fielding
This would be great, but I think if he gets smashed then he retires.he didn't bounce back immediately from degale or groves and I can't see him starting it now.

He has the punditry, and all the moaning about Jim watt could lead to us seeing a new co commentator, smith would be one of the favourites for the job,in fact the only thing holding him back is his ties with Callum and Stephen (he has commentated on Stephen before).

A pummeling off Abraham may make him decide the best thing he could do for his kid is be in good health long term.

At the end of the day boxing has gone backwards, people actual convince themselves good fights shouldn't be made due to promoters/networks when they should be the ones to concede to the fans being so its the fans who pay for the sport to continue.
